Wellington Battery
Energy Storage System

Wellington BESS – Project Information

The Wellington BESS is proposed to be developed, constructed and operated at 6773 and 6909 Goolma Road, Wuuluman NSW 2820.

The Wellington Battery Energy Storage System project consists of a grid-scale BESS with a total anticipated discharge capacity of 500 megawatts and a storage capacity of 1,000 megawatt hours within a landholding immediately east of the TransGrid Wellington Substation. The project will be delivered in two stages, the first of which being a 300MW / 600MWh BESS.

The project will include a substation, a control and office building, civil works, and electrical infrastructure required to connect to the existing electricity network. Construction is set to begin in 2024 and will provide up to 100 full-time-equivalent construction roles throughout the construction process. The BESS will improve the efficiency and reliability of the electrical grid by collecting energy from the electricity grid, storing it and discharging that energy to provide electricity when needed, in addition to providing critical grid support services.

We have prepared the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that provides a detailed description of the project and assesses the economic, environmental and social impacts of the project.

AMPYR Australia Pty Ltd (AMPYR) and Shell Energy Operations Pty Ltd (Shell) are jointly developing the project. AMPYR & Shell Energy develop, own, and operate renewable energy generation and storage assets across Australia. The development of these battery energy storage solutions and other non-network solutions and ancillary services provide essential firming to the Australian electricity grid. The Wellington Battery Energy Storage System project will be a significant milestone for the joint venture and BESS penetration in NSW.
